Essential Tools For Traditional Window Cleaning
Getting crystal-clear windows is not only about aesthetics but also improving the natural light in your home. While there are many modern cleaning techniques available today, nothing beats the time-tested traditional method.
Essential Tools for Traditional
The first step to achieving perfectly clean windows is having the right tools. While modern gadgets like steam cleaners and electric wipers may be tempting, the traditional method relies on simple, high-quality tools to get the job done. Here are the essentials you’ll need:
Squeegee
A squeegee is the cornerstone of traditional window cleaning. This tool is designed to remove water, soap, and grime from your windows in a streak-free motion. Choose a high-quality rubber blade to avoid streaks or scratches.
Our Favorite:
Ettore Master Brass Quick Release
When it comes to traditional cleaning, nothing beats the classic Ettore Brass Quick Release. While you’ll need to choose the right channel (squeegee blade size) for your specific needs, nothing compares to the feeling of holding a timeless brass squeegee—just like the one my granddad used.
T-Bar & Scrubber
A soft-bristled brush is great for loosening dirt and debris that’s stuck to the window surface. Look for brushes with synthetic bristles to avoid any potential damage to your windows.
Our Favorite:
Unger Complete MonsoonPlus Stripwasher
Let’s be honest, scrubbing a window isn’t rocket science. But when it comes to the job, we turn to Ettore for the perfect balance of price and quality. I could go on about its durability and performance, but the truth is—it's affordable and works perfectly for our business needs.
Bucket Belt (BOABS)
A sturdy, clean bucket belt is essential for holding the cleaning solution and T-Bar. Make sure it’s large enough to dip your brush and squeegee without spilling.
Our Favorite:
I’m torn on this one… For an entry-level window cleaner just getting started, I think the Unger Ninja Bucket Belt is a solid choice. It's affordable and functional, with space for two squeegees. However, I’m not a fan of the large logo placement on the product.
Once you’ve gained some experience, I prefer the Maykker Grackle. It’s not flashy, but it's incredibly practical and offers a comfortable fit with spacious pockets, making it a great option as you level up.
Microfiber Cloths
After using the squeegee, microfiber cloths are perfect for wiping down edges and corners. They help remove any leftover water and can be used to give the window frame a final wipe.
Our Favorite: Xero Microfiber cloths
This one’s pretty straightforward—no need to overcomplicate things. We’ve been using the XERO Microfiber, but honestly, you can’t go wrong with any good microfiber cloth.
Window Cleaning Solution
While you can use a homemade solution of water and vinegar or simple Dawn dish soap, you’ll get a professional result with a high-quality window cleaning solution designed for the task. Look for a product that’s gentle on your windows yet effective in removing grime.
Our Favorite: Space Cowboy
It's primarily valued for its low evaporation rate, which makes it ideal for our hot climate here in Charleston, South Carolina. This feature works perfectly for our weather, especially when cleaning historic windows.
